As a Professional Mindset Coach I pride myself on knowing what to say to others who are struggling with something. But as I found myself spiraling into a dark hole last week a conversation with one of my former athletes helped to snap me back into a positive (ish) place. Full disclosure, it was my adult daughter- but clearly leading by example has paid off in more ways than I can count! As the adult child of a self absorbed, disinterested mother, I have built in reflexes to certain situations. I don’t tend to wallow for long on things and as the Royal Family says- I “just get on with it”. But this particular day I just couldn’t do it. I was unfocused and cranky and couldn’t figure out why or how to get past it. I don’t usually tell my kids when I’m feeling “off” as I feel my issues are mine to deal with and they have enough going on in their own world. But I chose to tell my daughter I was having “a day”. Cranky, unfocused and just not finding any kind of enjoyment. She gave me this one simple tip: Find something to do where I can control the outcome-Put a puzzle together, work on my knitting or sewing or some other craft, read a book, just something within my control. One simple solution given in a five minute conversation. I almost felt stupid that I didn’t come up with that on my own. How could I – the Mindset Guru for others, have missed that simple solution.
Well I’m pleased to say I’ve been implementing that tool ALL WEEK. there will be a lot of crap going on in the next few weeks that I will have absolutely no control over, and I will be regulating myself with one simple thing as many times a day as needed.
Thanks Coach LD- fabulous advice.
And to all of the Coaches and parents out there-our teams and families really are listening and most importantly watching us.
